From the President

Everybody in the Competition Office is becoming more excited each day, as applications for the 2004 Competition arrive from all parts of the world. In the past month we had nearly 1,000 hits to our website. We do hope that we will not have that many applications to process in the next few weeks!

We wish the very best to all who are going on the Friends Tour which will incorporate the Auditions in Vienna and Moscow. We hope that the weather will not be too cold.

We look forward to record numbers attending the Australian Auditions in Sydney on the 6th and 7th March, 2004 at The Scots College in Bellevue Hill, as this is always a very exciting event.

Also, in production is a completely revamped website for the competition. Keep an eye out whence next you visit our website (www.sipca.com.au).

As this is the last Newsletter for 2003, on behalf of the Competition Board and Executive, I wish everybody a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

What they are doing now

Bernd Glemser continues to receive rave reviews for his recordings. The latest for his recordings of the Prokofiev Sonatas. “Classics Today USA - Rating 10 out of 10”. The recording was given 5 stars in Denmark and “Star of the Month (April)” in Germany’s magazine Fono Forum. Another review states, “If I had to choose one set of Prokofiev Sonatas to take to a desert island, it would be a tough decision to make and would undoubtedly come down to Glemser and Raekallio. In the end though, I believe I would opt for Glemser. His Prokofiev Fifth here is one of the finer versions available.”

Alexei Volodin has quite a heavy schedule of recitals and concertos during 2004, including the Ruhr Festival, Moscow, Erbach, Korbach, Frankfurt, Novi Sad, Belgrade, Lille, Paris, Schaffhausen, St Moritz, Zurich, Lucerne, Stuttgart, Rostov-on-Don, Berlin, Ludwigshafen, Munich, Cesky Krumlov Festival, Pescara, St Gallen, Montreux, Bern, Bad Säckingen and Fribourg. Concertos to be performed are Beethoven’s Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3, Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Chopin’s Variations Op. 2.
